"Pam, I just wanted to let you know the dress was perfect! I received more compliments on the dress than you can imagine!"

About Pamela Stewart

As a 6-year-old, playing "dress-up" and "fashion show" were not quite enough for Pamela. She longed to sew, just like her grandmothers, Elizabeth Wegal and Alyce Marks. Their willing tutelage helped Pam discover her lifelong passion: sewing and fashion design. Pamela would later honor her grandmother's encouragement through her company name and designer label.

As a teenager, Pamela learned advanced tailoring techniques through her 4-H club. She practiced relentlessly, sewing all her own clothes and sometimes designing for others. In 1973, she earned her fashion merchandising diploma, graduating first in her class from Patricia Stevens Career College and Finishing School. There she studied design, textiles, patternmaking, fashion history, and apparel retailing. As part of her training, she spent time in New York City's Garment District, studying various aspects of the fashion industry.

In 1978, Pamela established herself as an independent contractor, providing alterations for local retailers. This led to requests for custom designs for private clients. Over the years, sewing took a backseat to motherhood, but in 1995 Pamela launched Elizabeth Alyce Couture, her first full-time business, offering women's and children's custom clothing and alterations. Pamela became a formal member of The Professional Association of Custom Clothiers (PACC) in 1996. Through this national organization, Pamela accesses yearly educational opportunities, and she networks daily on-line with her colleagues all over the US, Canada, and the UK. Pamela currently serves as Chair of PACC's Scholarship Committee, which annually awards a scholarship to a promising student of the fashion industry.

Recently, Pamela trained and became licensed to design and sew custom-fitted women's pants for JSM Patterns. She is certified to teach sewing through the Home Sewing Association, and she enjoys volunteering in the costume department of the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre.
